I deliberately began with the lowercase i. For nuance.
This is a twin to another essay you will find as you read on.
It is a suspended almost-complete article that i declared unfinished once i realised another part to the equation that i was missing - metaphysics.
This writing is largely finished but I am still fine-tuning some concepts and ideas.
i had this theory, of which i became more certain as of recent; some people think too much, some people feel too much. Some people become afraid to feel, some people become afraid to think. Some people even confuse their thoughts and feelings. "Mixed feelings", "chaotic thoughts", familiar phrases to indicate a dysregulated or even dysfunctional state of our nerves. Part biological, part psychological (this will be its own article some day), entirely a common human experience, no matter who it is. Does one have to exist at the expense of the other? The food for thought, and the fruits of thought, and the cultivation of each, occurs hand in hand with the force of feeling and emotion, the sensory and meaning. There is, i posit, a false dichotomy, between "introverts" and "extroverts", a convenient label vis-a-vis the realities of introspection and extrospection; the background of which is simply about when what feels safe for an individual, vs. where one is known, seen and heard, faces a disconnect. (How these two separate, that's a discussion around the meta of past traumas and wounds which we shall not discuss here, or anytime soon, because clinical specialists in psychotherapy have done that ad nauseam). But to put it succinctly, introversion and extroversion could be likened to the way the soul breathes, in and out. The Introvert or Extrovert label is, i assert, a bifurcation of the states of the soul which is supposed to be fluid and not rigid, biographical alongside biological. When we label ourselves so rigidly, we risk a form of self-deification, creating an idol out of a personality trait. We get to saying, "I am an introvert," as if it were a divine decree, rather than an organic response to our current environment. The traditional model suggests a linear scale with the "Introvert" at one end of a polemic and "Extrovert" at the other. This creates a framework where an individual is defined by where they "recharge their batteries." However, this mechanical view fails to account for the biographical and environmental context of the individual. It creates a breeding space where cults of personality, reducing a complex existential state to a mere preference for social stimulation, arise in response to people seeking shelters of identity. Inherent in these ideologies we can detect the same, Western, secular impulse that fragments the soul into manageable, marketable binaries. (This writer disavows the old MBTI typecasting also, by the way.)
We cannot have a space for one aspect of being disconnected from the other in a separate space as it fragments our psyche, where feeling and thinking are internally divorced within ourselves. It forms a fault line where the cracks in our personality will take shape; i traced those lines by the pen in my hand before and found that the light which leaks through is potent, even pure, but the shadows that are projected are equally potent, even if puerile. Neither can nor should be concluded as right or wrong, good or bad, both are equal parts of the true; any conclusion must only be defined by the beginning and ending, much like an elephant right where it stands in a dark room or space, is known only after "seeing" or sensing its whole from trunk to tail.
The entire idea of the essay of which this article is a part of was broken into two, mainly about reconciling the philosophical and psychological, between "cognition" and "meta-cognition", in the broader sense, escaping the semantic pedant in order to break the paralysis of analysis in thought and feeling, and also to examine and recognise what are the forces at play which drove apart thinking and feeling, as if they were two separate parts of one human being, as if the right and left limb were entirely different, disparate calcified constructs of dead meat clothing mineral structure with zero relationship to the other from the foundation. This is to restore the vitality of an otherwise sterile sensing of one's own inner world. To put it briefly and simply down another avenue, there is a false dichotomy about human knowledge and the human mind, left-brain/right-brain belongs to the dustbin yesterday, as the Faustian Will falters and wanes in the face of all-too-human outcry and outrage at the macabre reality we collectively have summoned into being. As science has only begun to catch up, we need to stop and think-AND-feel (recognise) because science is only now discovering and studying that the heart has a little brain of neurons which works within its own network to regulate pulse, emotions and thoughts and even decision making can be influenced, as the heart has its own supply of some hormones (I will not reveal here as this is not an article about biology). A large portion of the communication through the vagus nerve that connects the brain and the heart, actually comes from the heart itself. This was not news to some of us who believe and recognise that the heart can "think" and "remember" and "see" and "hear". To some others, maybe this redefines new windows or doors to studying consciousness, or even memory, or free will.
But i did not want to rely merely on scientific theories and findings without actually having some real experience collected by myself, following the Goethean way, instead of Newton. Scriptural basis, lived experience and examination, critical thinking and observation, both intellectually and spiritually, all would have to align before I had the courage to write something like this without need for explaining or defending to an adversary. I re-iterate as I do in all articles my disclaimer: this all i write not as if an intellgentsia's academic treatise on knowledge as a guarded asset from within an ivory tower, but like a shared journey into knowledge embedded in a novel within the groves of Akademos. The entire matter is after all meta-physical. But it is not rigidly constrained to that, rather, it flows through. Now, the heart can and does think, in some ways we can't really explain in scientific methods, but is declared in faith according to revelation. Why we don't seem to know and don't rely on or use this fact, there are many reasons; there has, also, to be the root causes. Not everyone typically has done inner work with their own shadows and that is owed to first of all a lack of consciousness and awareness of their own mindscape and how to picture or locate things in their inner world to begin with. For that, matters relating to psychology, philosophy, are largely not treated as seriously as the physical world for some of us. Almost fighting against a hedonistic treadmill of a culture of living; but this particular article itself also became broken down into two headings, each with their own sub-headings for reasons i will not explain other than to say, it allows us to paint a clear background how the metaphysical begins and where/when it ends, usually when philosophy and psychology starts to draw lines and create boundaries. This is not such an essay. We are not arguing nor discussing rigidly in psychology or philosophy, but using it to access the metaphysics, the root discipline of philosophy itself (interested, deep readers should read Heidegger's "What is Metaphysics?", 1929.) This article begins with a walk-through from the known reality into the lived experience to give the reader a sense of the space and time within oneself where thoughts and feelings sublimate as energies of our being, not as two separate concepts cut apart by the philosophical wedge of modern psychology, rather in a way that is not impersonal or removed from the observation, but as part of the observation and examination, a reflective pondering and pensivity, without sounding pedantic or dogmatic.
Until i was sure and certain, this article was left unfinished until i realised what I walked through in two summer moons gave me an eye-opening episode of learning how to (or, well, how not to) give without abandoning oneself, beneath how to sacrifice without losing oneself, lost in search of purpose, or meaning. Hence I walk through the thoughts that gave me the words with which to complete this article as a primer, which began as a pensive reflection, also as a marked chapter in my life after coming full circle to close the loop. I have decided to include my experiences in rediscovering and reconciling thought and feeling (and to some extents, ego vs. identity, "Faith vs. Freud") as part of the whole matter in this article as a pre-amble providing some basis and context on my personal study, for whomever may benefit, or risk misuse at their own peril. If you are already a whole, integrated and balanced person, you may find the early half of this article a boring essay as it is a walk-through of how i traversed my own inner world as a fragmented psyche. Softened boundaries, weakened identity, the whole works of a person re-discovering their own self. For that, I suggest the reader should scroll down further and seek out the part named "Integration vs. Synthesis".
To relegate Metaphysics to a mere branch of Philosophy is a stalwart pedantic's claim, or perhaps an upstart neophyte’s determination of hierarchy in academic learning. (It may be excusable to a novice schoolboy, but it is not acceptable for a fully-fledged, functioning adult unless one is prepared to correct executive dysfunction.) This is an inversion as presumptuously absurd as constraining the force of Gravity as a minor sub-study of Fundamental/Theoretical Physics, right down theoretical frameworks for quantum gravity, or worse, nesting it as a secondary topic deep within a downstream sub-sub-branch like perhaps Ballistics.
Gravity was present when it pulled the particles of sand through many an hourglass or wax down a candle under many moons on the fringes of Europe and beyond, much earlier than it pulled down the apple knocking down upon Newton's head one sunny day. It did not become a peer to the falling apple, much like it would not submit to a projectile launched down a trajectory till its terminal impact. It is a primordial constant, as far as humans are concerned, an axiomatic law governing every physical endeavour on this earth. Physics is merely the historical human attempt at developing the language to observe, measure, decode, and articulate this gravity, within which ballistics (for a bullet, a missile, a falling apple - oh maybe not LOL - or a rocket) is the highly specialised, narrow application completely subservient to its rule. Without gravity, a projectile would fly in a straight line through the void forever, rendering the entire science of ballistics completely non-existent. To treat gravity as a localised sub-study is to mistake the vast cosmic environment for a minor chapter in a departmental textbook.
In very much the same manner, Metaphysics is not subject to Philosophy, it is Philosophy which is entirely dependent on an inherent metaphysics of its foundational assumptions; it did not author Metaphysics, just as Aristotle recognised when he termed it "first philosophy", "first science", or even "theology". To argue that metaphysics is merely a part of philosophy is itself a captive act of philosophising. Philosophy is not the source; when it was removed from that primordial anchor, it underwent a profound transmutation. It was reduced from an active, transformative way of being - Philosophia - a rigorous, lived intellectual discipline, into a mere spectator sport overlooking a live firing range or a war zone from behind a screen on social media.
Modern philosophy became a passive accountant tasked only with observing and calculating the trajectories of the human mind, downstream tracing an anxious arc through Epistemology, Ethics, onward into the mechanics and quality of Logic and Aesthetics. Philosophy today is merely perhaps, the vessel through which organic (philosophical) enquiry applying external models copied from a route based on the cartography of some individuals as it proceeds from the inward reality to an outward articulation, trying to map the unseen, internal forces of human existence that thrived long before we knew to name them.
Even Kant, in his monumental attempt to bridge this gulf, perhaps an ontological one, i may be wrong, could only reconcile the structural tension by framing Metaphysics as the generative root of human consciousness - the hardwired, internal architecture that filters all raw experience - while hoisting Philosophy as the overarching critical umbrella that governs the boundaries of human reason. Yet, under an organic gaze, this rigid, artificial umbrella softly transmutes into the living canopy of the tree itself in Goethe. The canopy represents the absolute outer perimeter of the mind's horizon; it appears to span and command the open sky as an overarching shield, but is in fact a perch on its highest branches for one to read and navigate with the stars in the night sky. But ultimately it remains entirely a downstream manifestation - shaped, sustained, and dictated by the metaphysical roots anchoring it from beneath and beyond.
Newton recognises the apple and distinguishes it from the root, which may offer a clean taxonomy on paper, and let it remain just that. But it is not the organic reality that sustains the tree; the fruit does not dictate the root. Much like Goethe recognised the entire tree encoded within the veins of a single leaf, modeling the same pattern as the branches would grow forth - a kind of geometry undergoing a living metamorphosis where the gestalt of the whole is governed by the same pattern that unfolds repeatedly (The Metamorphosis of Plants, 1790) - we must treat Metaphysics as the root discipline for our reading into our becoming human, from which we build the tensegrity of our Ontogeny. Only from this foundational grounding can we define our epistemology and our ethics, and only much, much further downstream then discuss the mechanics and quality of logic and aesthetics. Perhaps i may so boldly claim, that the gestalt of philosophy lives entirely within Metaphysics - for without the metaphysical whole to give them meaning to life, the analytical parts are merely dead fragments to the Faustian Will, the consequence of the Cartesian anxiety from pulling the metaphysical rug out from under himself with radical doubt.

In today's (rapidly devolving) theories, one would either-or be an avoidant/anxious individual (and these two "attachment" dynamics can co-exist within one individual) depending on which aspect they face, from which position they stand within themselves in the two self-created false premises of being. It could be said that one side feels too much, one side avoids feeling too much. It is much like the false dichotomy between the introvert and the extrovert. These terms often get confused and misused as labels (or even plaques of shields!) of identity, defining oneself to one particular mold. The distance between the mutual existence of the two seemingly opposite polarities, creates what I call, the gap of incoherence - between thinking or feeling - in a human being, which fluctuates. It shows up as inconsistency, avoiding accountability or responsibility (with an internal anxiety to face oneself - fears, guilt, shame and all - in one confrontation), amongst other things like anxiety or insecurity (with an internal avoidance of oneself - wounds, pain, regrets and all - in one reclamation). What appears as immature is often the result of that poorly developed, fragmented psyche which no one can heal without doing the inner shadow work by themselves. Otherwise still, one can only be guided or led, if only, they allow themselves to be vulnerable enough beyond the protective clutch of their ego that has carried them with pride through survival for the larger part of their lives. In fact this fortress of the ego is quite rapidly calcifying the balled fists of rage against patriarchy without understanding its source and structure, which hurts all human beings regardless. That is has become hard to recognise and identify feelings and emotions cleanly is not by accident, in the midst of doom-scrolled brains drenched in dopamine like an IV drip plugged into the very veins of our consciousness, we ever so slightly further inch away from ourselves and into the outside world reacting instead of responding in a loop or some say spiral, of fallacies of logic. We have a population now so well-versed in the avoidance/anxiety of facing themselves and admitting their (collective) complicity in the state of the world consuming more and more drugs, physical and metaphysical that we have sort of become masters in therapy language while doing next to none of the work involved. Perhaps we think we are too ugly to look at so we over-compensate in every which way the world tells us is beautiful. But we forget the magnificent mystery in how any human being can develop or we may know but do not dare to be curious and study this beauty that is the soul inhabiting our bodies, so we ignore all the possibilities of our weaknesses simply being our best strengths manifesting or applied in the worst ways at the worst times and places. These inner dimensions of our being does require work much like a muscle that would atrophy without exercising their functions, and somehow it has cost us more than it should before, that we rather mis-identify through broken, fragmented mirrors than recognise these ... parts of us which calls us to Truth. The ego is this such an enigma which needs to be studied, before we can really examine how we will heal, neither through avoidance, nor anxiety, but radical responsibility and accountability, in radical honesty first unto ourselves, which opens up sincerity, honouring ourselves, which opens up integrity. Not in the moral sense, but even deeper in a way I could say, the ontological sense. This is not an interrogation of the self, although it can be if we wish it so, but nobody's here to beat up anyone within us except ourselves, but it is an inquisition, an investigation which inches us back closer to recognising which parts of ourselves can and should be responsible as functional parts that carry and transmute this energy and force of emotion and feeling beneath or beside our logic and thinking, however flawed it may be. But this isn't about good or bad, but what is true about ourselves. Perhaps we fear what we find and that we are as capable as we fear in the sense that we fear the utmost limits of our capacity which we do not know how to measure, and that we may perhaps be more powerful and therefore responsible for some things than we allow ourselves to admit. Such an inquiry into our own nature is an answering of a call towards Truth, and our place in it is defined by the boundaries of our selves which therefore have dimensions that delineate and define what and who we really are, as a drop in the ocean or a grain in the desert. It can feel empowering yet diminishing all at the same time, where we recognise both our profound complexity yet complete insignificance within the grand scheme of things occuring in the universe. Perhaps that is why we rush headlong into performing towards things we don't yet fully understand, yet not fully prepared for, projecting and attaching instead of embodying and resonating. To run from the dreadful morbidity we perceive in our finite mortality, we hop onto hedonic treadmills further away from our true selves, and what a miraculous drug that is so that we can even fool ourselves in the best ways that we are "becoming" with the prettiest, softest most magical language which obscures what we already are being. But circling back, in all fairness we have to recognise at least some of the funny premises of "attachment theory" first, and the projections and enabling rather than empowerment and all that came along with it, and before it, which prepared us to be led into traps which sedate us into luxurious and delusional illusions, not as moral failures - but as all theory does - as attempts at examining and explaining human egoes in relation with each other.
"You can (try to) guide a horse to the water, but you cannot make it drink."
If the dimension of ego is large in comparison to the capacity of the heart and the soul, not necessarily to say that the ego was inflated, but rather maybe the capacity of the heart and the soul was diminished, or restrained, even stymied instead, biographically it can be a tough ask to get someone to go to the limits of their ego and let go of survivor's pride (the opposite of survivor's guilt) - not honour or adaptive pride - and i don't mean the term in the positive sense at all. (This is my own coining of a term which happens to demonstrate I nearly never write by being dependent on AI at all and my definitions certainly do not necessarily align with what the online mainstream definitions will say, biopolitically - not on Foucault's terms - at least)

Dimensionality gives us a foundation, a structure of thinking of sorts, with which to understand that there will always be more that we do not yet know, compared to what we know, through which we can map our venture from the known into the unknown - which is the very growth curve of knowledge itself - both for things beyond ourselves and within ourselves. The inner meanings and the outer reality, can be even diametrically opposite, from which the matter called the truth of a person, or any matter at all, can be found, or arrived upon. Where feeling and thinking can (or cannot) integrate, there it is found the complete wholeness of a person (broken / fragmented or not). Whether we find both in synchrony will tell us whether we are broken, fragmented, or whole in harmony with ourselves.
The image above is at best a 2-dimensional, flattened perspective, but to look at it in a three-dimensional, even four-dimensional reality that opens perspectives towards growth that is alive and benign, not sterile or malignant, will require a vastly more precise yet more subtle understanding of our human condition, but that is another article by itself, relying much more on subjects studied from faithful inspiration (through revealed knowledge) instead of purely, utterly modern, philosophical and psychological language - yet wanting of emotional or spiritual impact - which only arrives at the doorstep of our mystery. In this article is where i attempt to stretch forth from the 2-dimensional, (modernly dichotomous) world of words and definitions into more layers where we see life starts to show all the shades and hues in between. The reader is not invited for an academic treatise, but to let go of prejudice or projection much like immersing in a novel's experience.
I had initially procrastinated on this writing (which was meant to be a twin to another article you will later encounter as you read) because i was myself in chaos, after juggling between what were my feelings and what were originally not-mine, belonging to other people, to someone else - but i treated as mine - with empathy, in a bid to understand another, feeling them and not just thinking about them, according to their capacity and limits to encompass their whole being, also stretching my capacity as thin as poor man's butter on a thin slice of dry sourdough.
Yes it was that poor and meager an imagery.
Much, much thinner, by at least 10 orders of magnitude!!
All chaos and drama kills whatever sense of humour i would keep reserved and freely given for my inner circles and used sparingly for my public persona. Yes, i do have a sense of humour although that does not always necessarily get portrayed on this blog, yet. But picture how much effort i had pulled out of myself, that all I could manage for wry humour / sarcasm was a self-deprecation and debasement, reproachfully as i filled myself with blame while trying to return to my whole being, my authentic genuine self once again. Not to say that there was a time I was never authentic or genuine, I try to keep myself real with all the people i relate with, equal parts serious and equal parts jovial, but a time for this, and a time for that. In my limited yet fullest capacity that i was allowed to bring to bear, i found one side managing my own depth of thoughts and feelings, and the other side holding a logic and emotional weight that did not necessarily belong to me in a delicate, fragile balance. At some point what little of me was granted space in there became irreversibly "porous", and how well i could differentiate myself and someone else's energies became a major source of not only cognitive dissonance, but confusion.
In a way, i was guilty to myself of self-abandonment, trying to know another through their own standards and dictionary of means and experience, where it seems i thought i found a "third way" - non-judgementally - between the right-and-wrong extremes, focused on finding truth, certainty, but the outcome determined that there wasn't a way at all. Just an illusion created from vulnerability and insecurity that sat atop years of wounds i did not create, the price of which i paid for with myself at stake. There in that space I could not fully and truly be myself, authentically, but i could only be present as this small part of myself, for as much space as was afforded to me, for there never was truly any room for the whole of me to take space to begin with. It was either only my thoughts or my feelings that could get through, never both integrated with me with whoever would share that space, and the way i found out that this fragmentation occured would be in the worst ways i could imagine. The third way does exist, but it is not in the way I had initially figured. The third way can be walked, the way I went through was a lost cause from the get-go but i thought I could fly through it even with broken wings of fear and hope.
I walked down an experience which started indicating to me the perimeters of that mental space that I have been taught to exist in everybody, our inner worlds, shared or not, in this monologue of self-reflection. Between reality and potential, between possibility and plausibility (what is reasonable and probable) there was a denial of the self-truth and self-image i carried within myself. To accommodate another soul, I had basically (at my own ignorance) separated thought from feeling, as it seems to be the way for many people nowadays, to try to understand their realm of being, so to speak, to attempt to walk with them in their shoes, and see if i can trace their footprints in the sands of time. I separated my own analysis of patterns from my experience of the meanings that I uncovered. So engrossed was i in that experience that i nearly abandoned my own identity, because i dived in (or deigned) to adapt and comprehend as to what the other was running headlong into, chained to the roots, to save someone drowning by the shore. The more i felt, the more irrational it became, the more i thought, the more illogical it became. At some point, i was only given space to think and forced not to feel, at another point, there would only be space for me to feel on one hand but no space for my thoughts on the other hand to stay on the wheel.
But there was still more than one set of hands on that wheel, but only one belongd to me, and there were at least three other hands on the same wheel whom I knew, but yet with three feet on the pedal each belonging to someone else. What it meant for me was, the thread of energetic chaos that I eventually traced out, spelled out for me a deadly and doomed web that would one day paralyse and bind me on terms I cannot agree to, unless nobody else's hands were on that wheel. That was when i started to realised piece by piece, how thoughts were pulled one way while feelings were dealing with something else, and where my logic was stuck as my emotions were left behind in another way. Somebody was holding responsibility but not in all the ways he should only have been allowed to take responsibility since before, and somebody was not being accountable when given due right to; someone was adamant on staying present when giving due diligence, and somebody was obsessed with power and control when taking, well, control. I was not just fighting with myself, but shadows of people I don't even fully or truly know (nor if i would ever truly know), but when the time came for the curtains to fall.. I realised these energies were part mine but transformed into something i didn't entirely know about, when I gave it to match the wavelength and rhythm that i had met. I hadn't lost myself, no i didn't ever lose sight of myself.
But empathetically, not intentionally or consciously, i had put myself in those shoes which were not really my fit and simulated all the hurt and pain along with all the healing and pleasure they had to carry to read the pattern and simulate their energies to understand how things happened between them and why they were all here and present at the same time in this space that we had created. When i looked back at that space, i found that many things and words would no longer make or carry sense, to anyone party to that space, it might as well have become non-sense-ical, in many senses of the word. Rhetoric was broken, the poetic was butchered, nuance was completely lost. All but NOTHING could be understood in that quagmire. Only notions remained, notions that could either need doing away with, or correction, with reality and objectivity in tension with truth and the subjective.
What happened to all the analysis and observations I had collected along this path of mine? i had chucked it aside and labelled it "EGO", because i thought it was not my identity but my pride that was stopping me from embracing the experience whole. Therein lay the fatal flaw. All the disconnection, essentially between thinking and feeling, became elbow room for gross, wilful misinterpretation, and malignant misunderstanding. It would not necessarily be out of malice, just out of gross incompetence and ineptitude. All levels of abstract thinking and feeling together became jumbled up in one hot chaotic mess that was burning with still-smoldering ash with dark clouds flashing and thundering overhead, threatening obliteration the longer i stayed. I climbed out of it all scorched and charred black, my eyes blurred and my head burning in fever, and then shedding them after a hot bath; and just as quickly clarity returned to my tired eyes, glistening from staring hard through the veils in a torrential rain.
How did I go through such a horrifying hellscape in my mind and in my own soul - to the point that I found myself in a dream almost facing the wrong direction; till the wind blew and the real direction was reminded to me - i wonder and i will probably forever wonder carrying the embers of those moments unless i figure out why the hell i survived that long in time. It was like a replay of everything before in little more than two moons, balled up into a single divine fist knocking on the doors of my heart, between my ego and my soul. I could make neither heads nor tails in all the chaos and confusion, which was like a torture in its last seven suns.
And at that moment something clicked in place, or more like, snapped back into place like a bone or a joint being reset.
There in that space which identifiably was now only mine and mine only, because i was the only one suffering alone in that agony where i found no other person in the end, was where I realised that there was a fragmentation between what I should always have known as the two twin faculties of equal, mutually dependent cognitive processes of knowing and learning as one coherent whole. I thought I had been in a shared space created with the people involved but no they were never truly present with me all along. They were just projections, part light and part shadow, puppetteered by the players in that absurd game of manipulation of covert, vulnerable, narcissistic behaviours. In the end it was a space created temporarily - by me - with fluency in emotional and intellectual capacities, albeit with borrowed force and energy from the inhabitants of that space. That space had been meant to be co-owned by its individual members, but when the time for assuming ownership and accountability together, only one remained. It was in that space where i saw the separating of my feelings from my thoughts, my "intuition" from my better judgement, my reasoning from my rational self that I realised, all along whether through self-abandonment and betrayal, whether from beyond or from myself, at some point in modern life we all have been separating what should have originally and always have been one whole. When i could make neither heads nor tails, squinting through that headache that was when I saw it whole, blurred, but whole, beginning and end, that I stayed as long as i needed to comprehend. I could have cut short the lesson, but the experience would not have been as deep as it got within myself, that i could safely say, when "i thought" met "i felt", a sense and meaning I never truly quite grasped returned to me whole. In a sorry mess, sure, but whole. In addition to that, there was a fundamental, almost axiomatic truth which I had kept at a distance which I had learned some time ago; while the ego can only grow (or more like, evolve and transform) by breaking itself and being reborn, like a struggle of breaking out of a cocoon to develop wings that could truly fly, the (core, whole) identity cannot change its base or its position, at least not without the alchemy of fire (and this would be a separate subject altogether) cast within the right crucible or mould, with the hammer of truth on the anvil of the soul. (I am NOT subscribing to Freudian psychological theory although I use similar-sounding words.)
But none of space-holding can occur without making-time, although it sounds like a complexification of a simple thing, it is no mere thing or concept when you are living in a system where time and energy is traded for wealth and power like commodity, like currency. You cannot really hold a space you haven't truly recognised, like that which you own, because a true boundary at the edge of your self does not become "porous" except that you haven't really come to terms with it that you are capable of naming it when you encounter it. To carve out time in your life for anything now it must be acknowledged carries real cost, costs that one may not be able to afford, ill-prepared for, or may be irreversible, maybe irreplenishable. It can cost us energy, in the sense of emotions and feeling, which in turn costs us attention and presence, all of which functions on time, or rather, being in-time.
The system of time, and how we feel in it, that we carry within ourselves may either be philosophically secular or prophetically sacred. If we don't recognise time as something that feels as though it is getting faster or running out, or without this urgency and consciousness of one's mortality, we will not find the worth of meaning in anything we do, and we fail to give value where it is due. We may only realise it after its time has passed, and waste that resource which never returns. That is what it means by waste of time. That then i would say is the moral failure, the evil that we want to fight. A wasted life where one never grows and expands beyond one's illusion of ego, stuck in a perpetually immature state, a Peter Pan syndrome. Child-ish, not child-like. It is when we will be blinded by the illusion or delusion of options, of choices, instead of obligations, and decisions, whether ethical or moral, maybe even spiritual. Arguably this speaks to the mores and excesses of the luxuries of privilege and grand notions of an ideal in life that we should never reach, because the truest most vilest form of poverty is not in having nothing, but being able to give nothing despite all that we have - despite having everything - of experience, of knowledge, of wisdom, of wealth, of health, so on ad infinitum. That is when we no longer own anything, but everything owns us when we are beholden to it, at its behest, when we what we think we hold in our hand is actually what we hold in our hearts. Cue that phrase tat sounds like people are meant to be loved, and things used, but now we love things, and use people. That sentence actually speaks to us a moral anxiety; we don't know it yet but actually we hate who we are. To that outcome, we would forgo a path of growth and maturity, self-development when we do not invest and manage the time that is the cost for such valuable and powerful experiences and observations. Instead if we spend it into forms of entertainment or self-amusement and other such dopamine addictions, which is the extreme but equal opposite of ennui or self-pity, we would have taken a biological sledgehammer to our inner world by limiting its receptivity to only one set of brain juices. We then end up loving an idea of who we can be (which is anything to any extent, really) instead of loving who we are. No, we don't even know how to love ourselves, gently, kindly and compassionately hold ourselves accountable with responsibility, in complete presence with sincerity, a kind of honesty unto oneself. Such that when chances and opportunities come for us to return to that primordial truth of ourselves, we skip or break it in the most violent and vehement tantrums and denial like a child(addict) or toddler(dreamer) losing its favourite candy(drug) or toy(totem). We hate the sobriety of lucid reality and reach for the drunkenness of a fantasy ideal.
Even when we sit in lucidity in sober reality, we could still negotiate with it searching for the high of fantastic idealisms lulling us into a lost high that distracts us from the low we find ourselves in, or a daydream that obscures us from the sleepwalking we feel in ourselves. All anger, pain, grief, shame, hatred stems from the jarring threat of ending the illusions of our spiraling search in circles for that comfortable cradle in our early life that we should be able to remember but have forgotten due to reasons, perhaps not of our own but the reasons we give ourselves are often that which stops us from becoming, or at least building that cradle within us which we can give to someone else. The work that we need to do for legacy, for posterity, so that life can truly continue with the vitality that it deserves so that life doesn't just move on, with or without us anyway; it is living in the truest sense not going through the motions of routine but the steady stillness of presence from which all movement would carry meaning. When we do not take charge of ourselves, with accountability and responsibility, it should then be no wonder that our biographical history may carry endless unresolved darkness and tragedy, because so much energy and untapped potential in sense and meaning was not properly expressed, exacerbated with self-limiting beliefs and self-fulfilling prophecies. Even if we believe we have grown past that, but the avoidance of effort and pushing through discomfort costs us more than we actually want to give credit for.
When we break structure in ourselves and sacrifice depth, the shallow and/or even deformed inner world risks warping perception of reality and being warped by it also. This structure is not even just about an order of rules in hierarchy, but the scaffold of a system of axioms and laws, a backbone of being, the spine of a book if you may see so. It is not a simple two-dimensional point A to point B start to end where nothing else exists or matters beneath or beyond, but at least a three-dimensional point of departure with intention, and recognising the impact in and of our presence at that destination of interest. The entire journey from departure to arrival, or arrival to departure, depending on where you are looking from, is the becoming of our true self, and all the time spent and space occupied in between creates the breadth and depth that broadens and expands our horizons and perception of our being in reality.
Perhaps some of us may feel that we aren't "enough" if we haven't "become" anything but that would not matter if we don't even know our true being that fills up this biography of our individual lives, that we try to "become" everything we are not through not recognising what our beings truly are. With the limited time of our finite lives, perhaps we will never truly be "enough" because we are each figments of a humanly indeterminable collective of human history, at the late afternoon of world history, in the midst of transcendentally infinite time. But surely we will weigh a certain amount that suffices a certain vessel once we know what and how we are being in-time, in contentment. But if time is sacred, and therefore so space is honoured, perhaps we can value ourselves and each other better when we recognise virtues and vices, strengths and weaknesses, as qualities of the same, like both light, colour, and darkness, shadow, artefacts of the same source, instead of impertinence in ignorance and entanglement, but intentionality in illumination and enlightenment, from beyond-time, that has existed before we are born, and will exist after we are gone. Then we will perhaps understand the dimensions of our being and hold each other to the best of our capacities in best regard and respect, in a state of both clarity and certitude, not a simple confidence or certainty, born of honour and not just pride.
The above illustration presents to us a simple rule - while dimensionality in thinking provides our structure of knowing and sensing for our learning, then temporality, from which we explore the depths of our feeling, and the system of knowledge and meaning we hold in our experiencing time, forces us to require and adopt an organic system of meaning in our soul, that tracks through our life downstream and upstream through time that we fill, instead of only a hierarchical structure of existing in the body that we carry uphill or downhill through all the spaces we visit. The value of what we make of ourselves in existence is determined by the quality of its foundations. It is combining both when we say, we recognise. This is at once exceedingly complex yet profoundly simple because we are using the language of philosophy, psychology, combined in metaphysical discourse. But in an increasingly, maddeningly polarised world that goes insane with semantics fighting with "my truth" vs. "your truth" - which is really another way of saying "this is how i want and need reality to be like for me", I take great pains in not forcing down anybody's throats things like "rules" or "order" so that people stay engaged with a concept or an idea and find no time or meaning to begin to mount an assault on the messenger. But much of that sounds like a pipe dream, because the Faustian Will that has shaped today's world does not see it as a living organism but dead matter meant to be used. Yes, even you and me as units of labour and statistics calculated in a corporate ledger. But we are not about to wallow in self-pity just because it feels safer to humility, which exposes us to the truth, forgoing which we escape from temporary discomfort into humiliation.
Now then that we have identified that space where both belong, can we begin to explore the core of the matter at hand.
The integration of knowledge and information yields meaning, and so goes together with the necessity of integration of logic with emotion, thinking and feeling, for understanding and wisdom to live in a human being who has embodied this balance, and is therefore something to do with accountability, with the meaning of oneself, one's raison-d'être. Purpose is something derived from duty and direction, something related to responsibility which we will explore as we traverse this line of thought, penetrating as we find, layer by layer. So it is not about being dogmatic or pragmatic, neither from a position that is pedantic or didactic, but an effort to combine both in a state beyond just purely intellectual understanding, but of knowing, or recognising, i.e. an aspect of gnosis. This is touching upon the realm of experienced knowledge interfacing with lived reality, or living knowledge and experienced reality, one could also say, depending on the position one takes as the observer, from outside, or from within. One does not preclude nor negate the other. It may not want to invite critique or argument, but neither does it prevent nor shy away from a conversation or debate.
In a nutshell, the balance of rights and responsibilities in the duties and diligences due of one's role(s) is what we frequently miss, when we do not have a solid and sound integration within ourselves. From Heidegger's essay on the "Question Concerning Technology", we gain a few words from his lenses that provides us an examination on the onotology of our Being, "Dasein", with regards to techne, as he describes Technology as an "enframing", gestell, where nature (and man) are treated as "standing reserve", Bestand. This philosophical examination into the nascent world of Technology occured contemporary with Ellul's "The Technological Society", also in 1954, and the same metaphyiscal/ontological enquiry can be applied with Ellul's other books similarly themed but for the "Bluff" and the "System", in the years that came. Much later in history is the recent Kingsnorth's "Against the Machine" which attempts to arrive at a solution in preserving the self amidst a technological environment, which is an understatement of a kind to make, because the system which is now a nascent, new hegemony that has been called "technofeudalism" by Yannis Varoufakis, reaches far and wide wherever one lives in this postmodern world. But in an ever-increasingly globalised world where nearly every city takes on a cosmopolitan colour, some questions arise on practicality and feasibility, to speak realistically. Much of the discourse of disconnecting and "digital detox" occurs from people already in the cities and already steeped within privilege, as the discourse primarily speaks from a position of self-preservation in the midst of a madness of a groundless, rootless world that deifies the self, as the world becomes increasingly humanistic. How then do we know to be safe if we have not the privilege or social mobility to pay for our "escape" into a wilderness where we self-subsist behind toll-gates of a digital fiefdom.
In its deeper sense, we do not truly "know" anything; we do not possess knowledge - Knowledge - or wisdom - is not an external object, an asset, or data to be captured within the net of human attention to achieve dominion over like a commodity. Instead, we discover, or we unveil (aletheia), and we remember (anamnesis) - quite literally, an "un-forgetting" (a-letheia + ana-mnesia) - of that which is eternal and subsistent, Truth. We have memories sociocultural or personal, collectively or individually, from experiencing human (or well, some may consider this would not preclude divinely inspired) knowledge. There is the social, communal manifestation of Knowledge which is culture, which matters just as much as individual learning and study, and from there we acquire knowledge that we search for that either takes a fashion of thinking we resonate with and seek for, and we put it on much like we adorn ourselves with clothes. This form of knowledge while seemingly "acquired" and preserved like a treasured belonging, is not an external acquisition form the outward like a thing separate from ourselves. It is a resonance with the outward from the inward, a tuning of sorts to a wavelength that we have within ourselves. From thence we start to recognise there is "other" knowledge that is "out there" but preserved within the hearts and minds of other people with perhaps a different methodology or even epistemology, but collectively, it is all an interface of man with his natural environment in a culture that cultivates that relationship (whether harmonious as a pro/deuteragonist or adversarial, antagonistic).
The best minds in history had knowledge across cultures, as well as across domains, integrated around central themes of their own meaning and purposes, some inherited through legacy, some re-discovered or re-made by necessity. Their knowledge was not born in a vacuum, as even all polymathic intellects had held and maintained relationships with peers of different expertise and gleaned and shared knowledge amongst each other much like wealth circulating between people throughout history. The essence of Knowledge therefore is eternal and subsists all throughout human history and cultural memory as a constant since the beginning at the source and origin. What exists and is recognisable as "knowledge" today is really information, bias, perception, understanding. It can be said that without bias, nothing can be perceived, because there would be nothing to refer from nor to intersect with. Relevance or lack of it will collapse, interest will flag or perhaps fade, for the un-curious or plainly dis-interested where they did not resonate in an encounter with an "other". For if something can be held with such a manner of behaviour or attitude (well, way of approach) towards it, that condition can be said to mean this matter is not worth "knowing", and therefore falls in the beholder to the level of just data, information to be "noted" and/or filed away to some back corner of the mind, forgettably so - regrettably so - as what was just discarded was a window to the reality and truth that its observations and measurements drew from, in an "other"-hood of the ego. The synthesis of all the sum total of the information (facts, data, measurements) and understanding (perspectives, slants, biases) that we have or hold, only forms perception, observation or perhaps simply opinion. For formal, official or legal maxim, that is jurisprudence. That is not knowledge per se. It is not the whole, complete picture, it just presents a partial, perhaps fragmented imagination of knowledge, and it is easy to control, vulnerable to manipulation of power. It can give coherence but whether it is cogent, remains as a question. But how we got to confusing a knowledge with an understanding is peculiar, and this has to do with the treatment and attitude we adopt towards Knowledge as a human axiom, and the systemic culture within which we cultivate it.
All of K/knowing - even in ancient philosophy - at its purest most resilient root definitions, by etymology of words, pertains with a form of un-forgetting/remembering, unveiling/recalling, besides marking/informing; recalling past experiences (of oneself or other people) and information interfacing with the present environment and reality, to locate or situate the position of a present moment within the map of one's knowledge or being. These are states of resonance between the three, time, space, and self, if you would prefer a more sublime and nuanced picture. Whether viewed as a receiving or an inheritance of collective experience through memory born of (specific) Knowledge / (general) knowledge that precedes us, or divinely inspired, the essence of knowledge is eternal, interfacing with the present through the delicate interplays of procedural and declarative memory. There are pages of research especially in the neurobiological study, of patient "H.M." (Henry Molaison) which support this in several ways on several levels too long to explore here, besides the observations on Victor of Aveyron or Genie, two famous feral children in the Western world. Our collective understanding of knowledge has shifted throughout history, just as our understanding of metaphysics has also transformed, either between humanistic or animistic, but now there is also a third observation that might be termed as monistic. But my lament is there is a severely (artificially) limited access or even literacy to the endless (or else lost) treasure troves and oceans of knowledge now, owing to the rise of INI/FFK. (I'm so lazy to type the entire thing but that link takes you to where I mentioned it in full)
But taking from examples in the ways polymathic individuals have managed to integrate different domains of knowledge according to the key motivating factors and/or sense of purpose and meaning together in their being, through thematic mapping or categorisation, i.e. they organised the knowledge they had according to not hierarchy but maybe a toolbox of skills with the tools of knowledge, integrated into an internal map for the different meanings and purposes (a little bit on that later) that they've associated with the things they learned and remember. The purpose of knowing so much of such this or that in knowledge was often to help assist people to speak better, act precisely, think clearer, organise better, to help someone do or achieve something, typically to some level of minimal competency towards excellence, which I might say is effectiveness and efficiency in balance and harmony. Purpose is defined with action and meaning is proven with the result that is built upon the intention. It is a combination of honesty and sincerity, where both sides together build something constructive, not extractive or exploitative. The reason much of scientific or mathematical development into expertise giving both breadth and depth in the various fields of knowledge started out from addressing a need in society, according to the different cultures we can observe in community.
For a quick example, we could look no further than the origins of Algebra (Al-Jabr) from Al-Khawarizmi from whose namesake the word Algorithm was derived. The initial need for calculating (relatively) complex simultaneous mathematical equations was first made for the divisions of inheritance from the revealed, scriptural laws of farāiď, where we first see the mathematical representation where more than one or two things need to be simultaneously true (cue into holding two truths at the same time in emotional maturity.) When meaning and purpose is divergent or not unified in our internal map of knowledge, it can create a chaotic mental image inside us, instead of a coherent mindscape. The same thing happens when we fail to integrate our knowing with both logic and emotion, through thinking and feeling as though they were two entirely separate, mutually exclusive and independent factors of the human psyche. We subvert the rightful place of the natural pattern of the interdependency (not co-dependency) of our internal faculties of knowledge when we fail to recognise the order and system of meaning and purpose in ourselves, sometimes even inverting them in our nervous confusion and mismatch. This is something that happens usually when we try to synthesise in the Hegelian dialetical sense, treating feeling and thinking as two antithetical factors. Heads-or-tails become confused within ourselves and we think of something in a certain order but forget how to feel with the same order instead, going for what is familiar e.g. intents, and vested interests in goals and outcomes first, over impact, and voluntary inquiry into logic and method. It is the chaotic soup of not asking the questions of Who, What, Why, Where, and When, and How, in the correct orders for whichever endeavour we attempt to undertake. Sometimes, the Why matters first instead of the How or collectively the What, Where and When of the Who. Much of synthesising in the Hegelian, dialectical sense asks of the person What, before the Why and How first, which is counterintuitive in the realm of emotion and feeling because an underlying logic or method, a rationale, is given priority without the reason,Why, where the Who operates when what needs to be done is satisfied first.
Now while it sounds really simple, which it is, but by no means is it an easy thing to do especially today, proven by the insane amounts of commentary on theories on anxiety and avoidance in doing real work, personally or relationally, when the way we have been educated in the culture of knowledge currently widely instilled in the modern environment becomes incompatible with our cultural memory and upbringing. It requires going against the grain of what we consider "common-sense" which is really a myth (look up the "Myth of Common Sense" please.) It is one thing to explain and deconstruct our condition but it is another thing altogether to actually get to work on it.
This can be a jarring, disturbing sensation for someone who has not yet granted themselves a solid, grounded self-identity and self-image, balanced in a closed loop of order and priority, much like being given a map to read but with unclear, or sometimes no immediate clue of, purpose or direction, the why of where they are going. In thinking and feeling, in communication, this relates to how we use and interpret words and sentences according to the priorities and capacities that influence or dictate choices. There are even observations on the many theories being in fact modeled after a white-washed pair of lenses of the middle-class in the modern economy.
Sometimes we speak with a conclusion at the beginning, sometimes at the end of the sentence, the difference makes whether one would, either way, (mis)construe the food for thought as an explanation, or an argument. Both require different modes of reading, one with patient curiosity, and one through pensive certainty. This is to speak nothing of erudition - it is just a state - existentially; a person who has lost curiosity in exchange for absolute (or stubborn) certainty (well, actually self-confidence), or traded this same brand of certainty for a pathologically insatiable curiosity, locks themselves away from any path towards progressing down intellectual or emotional maturity. The truly erudite know even with both eyes closed in blind faith, the journey of knowledge will never be complete, and is therefore immune to boasting or bragging about knowledge, even if he appears so, to minds of lesser capacity to discuss ideas, only things or people. Actually to this lesser capacity, self-confidence can be mistaken easily for certainty. I know because I have done that mistake before too. It is a common stage, or phase, of all human experience. Denying it does no good for anyone.
"Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss things/events, great minds discuss ideas."
- i care not enough to remember exactly who said this but this sentence tells us of the shift from cognition, to meta-cognition. In between is the process where the balance is struck, which I will call, syncognition, a unified flow of the two in balance. One where there is not too much inclination towards thinking which runs rampant, or a self-obsession rather than true wisdom. In a sense, wisdom is the bravery to recognise those two with courage to hold both as necessary and true at the same time.
This can be simplified as thinking of both circumstances and consequences at the same time, both in the short and long term. But it is not that simple.
Because the thinking process for considering long and short term thinking - considering goals and the patterns and models we rely on to achieve those goals in thinking, BOTH objectively and subjectively - requires us to identify and recognise reality and circumstances at the same time, there is another element here which is the peri-cognitive environment, the framework under which is yoked the process of thinking about something itself.
While careful thinking requires one to carefully think (duh) what is within one's control, and what exactly lies just outside the realm of one's control, conscious thinking necessitates the premise of those thoughts to be critically considered, spatio-temporally. In a saying, "begin with the end in mind" is the only reliable way that the modern world offers this valuable insight into the circumstances of thinking itself. I mean to say, one can do something with care, while also not being critical at the same time. Thinking about feelings is a trap when feeling one's thoughts is not done. Does one come first or second? Chicken-and-egg question. Pointless to a certain extent, as the true answer escapes that mode of black-or-white questioning. Care cannot be sustained without critique, critique cannot survive without care.
One may begin and carry a thought, only to discover confusion and lack of clarity or doubts or even chaos, precisely from the lack of understanding of the systems and structures beneath and within which said thought occurs. This is rampant amongst those of us who do not yet know how to ask the right questions, the most meaningful ones, or often due to feeling too much while thinking, they simply do not have the wisdom (well, courage) to acknowledge the existence of such questions. Alternatively, there are also some of us who could not yet understand the answers within us, often due to having too many thoughts while feeling, simply lacking the knowledge to decode the meaning behind each conflicting thought seemingly clashing against our feelings and emotions.
Courage can be said to be a sort of bracing where emotions are involved, without ignoring fear, for courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to act in spite of it, but it is with the wisdom and bravery combined, with which it becomes easier to acknowledge a few things: fear, is anticipation of pain that has yet to happen. Confusion, is pain with no direction.
Anxiety, which is an outward form of internal avoidance, is really a sort of drowning in ones feelings unresolved by the separation of thoughts that fail to address or question the very feelings and emotions they are associated with addressing, or attempting to address. One can say there is a relative excess of thinking and logic that drives one to act compared to emotion and feeling that has yet to be accessed properly. So to speak, there is a sort of incapability or incompetence on the inner work to confront the truth beneath all that over-thinking. It is from an excess of the sensory with the perceived absence of meaning.
Avoidance, is the complete absenteeism or the escaping, running away from observing thought or feeling, instead replacing it with the mechanical, a sort of going through the motions, instead of focusing on the meaningful. It is turning away from oneself (not in the way the Sufis give up the ego) due to the internal anxiety of lacking the tools and skills of thought to address the emotions and feelings present in that space. To confront those emotions and feelings successfully, their inner work requires admitting an inadequacy and incapacity. So to speak, there is a relative excess of feeling and emotion compared to thought and logic. It is a form of self-betrayal that is its own kind of choice to not make a choice, a choice to not feel what needs to be felt. Both dynamics end up doing the same thing with their inner world but in different ways. We should be naming this anxious-avoidant dynamic a coping mechanism by now, as they are not much too different now as we examine.
The motivations may be similar, in that both have a disconnection between themselves and what they feel and think, but one is attempting to address it with all the tools and skills they have been practicing but without a proper map, and the other simply forgoes the whole affair, almost to a level of apathy. There is a clear point where the anxious individual differs from the avoidant, where the anxious individual carries more empathy and is more prone to question oneself and fearing their own role and dynamic in conflicts and disagreements. But that is also its own problem, fear, not freedom. In the language of cultivation, we recognised one lower state of the ego, in arabic we say nafs al-ammarah, a self-focused and centered level of being, concerned with self-soothing, often appearing as "self-regulation", and another is struggling with itself, even to the point of gaslighting itself at times, doubtful or unwilling to give so much leeway and weight to their feelings and emotions, fearful of their lower ego's fires, and fearful of being unworthy and abandoned because of its lowliness, and in arabic we say this is a nafs al-lawwamah, the intermediate stage before the beginning of some enlightenment. One is passive, the other is active, but for both the inner and outer worlds have been fragmented, divorced, such that there is no unity or shall we say common ground between the feelings and the thoughts, the logic and the emotions that a person can feel. Something is acting bravely upon fear, and another is reacting based off it without wisdom. There couldn't be courage here yet, only choices that lead to either progress or regression. This does not hierarchically place one above the other, that is a fundamentally wrong notion that must be discarded; they are merely part of a spectrum between the ending of darkness and the beginning of enlightenment, reaching towards inspiration.
Make no mistake, in both anxiety and avoidance, each action or decision is actively or passively its own form of choice. The difference is whether the cost of that choice is outsourced or over-compensated, socially, or relationally we might say, within systems of meaning and knowledge that may well truly not be our own to begin with, but one imposed upon us that we use differently at different stages of life, be it socially, communally, economically, or psychologically, philosophically, then politically so as a collective state of being and consciousness. We either oppress others, or we oppress ourselves, and we really are being unjust or unfair to ourselves either way.
Perhaps the answer lies in between the ego and the soul (haha, Faith: 1, Freud: 0), where the heart has to be stabilised first upon truths that at first seem to conflict with our perceived identity (well, id/ego, fine, if i stop bashing Freud a little bit), but really is a conflict between a self-imposed self-limiting identity vs. our self-image and limited self-expression (cue knowledge schema vs. language schema). Thoughts do not begin where feelings end, nor conversely so, and they never have to be that way, but our (modern, capitalistic) world sometimes forces or influences us to pick one or the other. Learning to embrace and integrate both could be a lifetime struggle, but unless we open ourselves up to swim (or drown) in the twin oceans of inner and outer knowledge, we cannot reconcile between the two mental (intellectual) and emotional (well, spiritual) faculties of our being without first letting go of pride which exists within ego, or arrogance which exists within knowledge that rests with its origins in the soul. In other words, what is required here is humility, towards one-self, and no other. Sometimes it's okay to admit that we are the worst of ourselves, that we are the problem, because in that itself is a solution called submission and surrender, that then allows us to intentionally embrace what appears to us as fear, but is really non-acceptance of pain that has not yet happened, in other words, the rejection of a lack of confidence or uncertainty. Survival, the nemesis of Growth. For the uninitiated, this is a trap of perpetual tragedy, where the demons of self-pity and self-sabotage thrive. The problem with the fragmented psyche is this loss of identity, or obscuring of the identity. From there one's role, responsibility (and rights) become vaguely understood, defined, and recognised. The roles that we have played, how familiar they have become to us, the capacity and all things associated with those, tolerances, biases, become hard-wired into our nervous systems, creating neural maps across different stages of life, training patterns at different points, and these are always more often than not incoherent. A child parentified forced to manage the emotions and reactions, behaviours and outcomes of their elders, a teenager infantilised, gaslighted or manipulated to distrust and doubt, to question and even neglect one's own reality, without a concrete model of being to build their sense of self and identity upon, and eventually an elder youth forced to survive, carries the nervous patternings that are unsuitable for the role of an elder, or a functional adult that can carry oneself and lead, all before finding one's true authentic being. From the same problem also lies the true root cause of procrastination according to a businessman: procrastiation happens when the actions that we need to undertake arare misaligned with the beliefs that we have over ourselves, that is to say, we cannot sustain actions which directly conflict with how we see ourselves. This nervous system mismatch is when our body has yet to catch up with our mind that has only begun to alter the patterns we have built our self-image upon.
A syncognitive state where thinking (and feeling) and being able to observe and be aware of both the logic and emotions behind them, essentially a cognitive + metacognitive balance cannot be adopted or entered unless one of two things happen, which may be in due order or independent of each other. The state where the ego is free from its own shackles, where one is in a state of non-fear yet non-courage either, where everything just is, where identity does not influence actions towards results, where one can just be, that flow state can come from switching off the ego and all its noise, and then subsequently performance excels without effort as everything is made to happen in the moment as it unfolds, even as mistakes or obstacles come through, whatever may be adjusted or controlled (or rather influenced, to various extents utilised, manoeuvred or manipulated) will be responded to appropriately and adequately, aptly. Alternatively, this "flow" state can be transformed and evolved into a mode that can be entered or exited at will, as long as one learns how to shift into that mode by aligning thoughts, feelings, being, all together as one triad. At this point, the phrase "Mind, Body and Soul" may come across as the familiar thing to say, but we are not yet talking about action, but rather the pre-requisite internal-external alignment that makes excellent action possible in the first place, and that is when the heart is able to hold both the ego and the soul as equal entities each in their own positive feedback loops to illuminate and enlighten and polish each other mutually. This sounds simple like some technique to be applied as easily as to how a muscle would work, and be done with it.
But that's the biggest illusion we can cast upon ourselves, because this requires a level of inner knowledge and awareness, consciousness of so much vulnerability and intimacy unto one's own true self and identity, that most people chicken out of the rigorous demands of such cultivation, whether at the start or even halfway through. If it were only that easy, there would be lesser conflicts (maybe wars, haha but nope, that's a matter of alignment within natural ally-enemy contrasts and therefore a totally different story or article on its own) and almost no infighting as the taming of self-interests and harmonisation of which would be far easier and more widespread. Or maybe it is already happening at some levels, limited in scope or expanded across shared awareness or consciousness, but the reader (and writer) who might be here who is fighting against their inner turmoil and internal conflicts is just finding their way to truly reach or join the ranks of their respective circles like such that each effort brings one towards progress, elevation and a much better state than before, and perpetually so finds more imperfections and endless difficulty in continually facing themselves and rising above and against. So let one such as i not be fooled into thinking to have already done the inner work, for the moment you think you have done it, you fall into a trap created by your own ego, as i have observed many who stall and fell on their personal journeys before and still, and have paid different prices, often at the cost of themselves or someone else, or both, and many too who managed to break that trap and continue forward doing the inner work.
The grass is not greener on the other side.
The grass is greener where you water it.
I thank the humble reader for making it up to this point.
